‘Grab a basket each,’ said Mrs Appleby, pointing to the stack of little baskets on the ground.

It was their second morning on the farm and the sun was shining in the autumn sky. It was the perfect weather for picking strawberries.

‘Now, you can fill your baskets, but just one basket each today,’ she warned.

‘Can we eat them?’ blurted Oliver.

‘You can sample,’ replied Mrs Appleby. ‘That means you can have a taste of one or two to see if they are good, but you are not to eat every strawberry you pick.’ Mrs Appleby laughed a hearty laugh.

‘Off you go!’ yelled Dad as Oliver, Willow and Amelia ran into the strawberry patch. Clare toddled along behind with Mum trailing after her.

‘I LOVE strawberry picking,’ said Amelia. She bent down and touched one of the strawberries. It wasn’t very red yet and was quite small. ‘Now, Willow. This one isn’t ready. It’s too firm.’
